First Few Days At STEP

Anatomy & Physiology (with Mr. Davoren)- Students were challenged to create a bionic hand that could be tested on seven different levels. These different levels increased in difficulty, with the first level being to pick up a paper ball and the last level being to pick up a marker and draw with it. Working in teams, students used rulers, papers, strings, and tape to make their bionic hands a reality! In doing so, students were able to learn about the inner workings and muscular mechanisms that are involved even in simple everyday activities.

Anatomy & Physiology (with Ms. Moore) – Students used O’Net to research different healthcare occupations. This includes information such as associations that the career is involved in, education requirements, salary, job outlook, general job description, as well as advantages and disadvantages. They used poster paper to present their careers to the class. Luckily, we’ll have many dentists, pharmacists, and dermatologists (and countless of other occupations) in the near future!

Environmental Sustainability (with Ms. Deng) – Students created their own terrariums with potting soil and succulents. A terrarium is an enclosed container that contains a plant. By being encased, the humidity of the containers provides an ideal environment for the plant to thrive. With the correct living conditions, many terrariums can become self-sustainable.

Social Psychology (with Ms. Flores-Robles) – Students got to know each other better by working in groups to solve a Lie Detection Task! This is the first of many activities to demonstrate and study human behavior.

SHSAT Preparation (with Mr. Russo) – Students worked in groups to solve questions involving grammar for the upcoming SHSAT Exam!

Neuroscience (with Ms. Barrientos) – Students learned many of the foundational words and core terms used in this disciplinary field. These terms will be used by the students throughout these weeks in upcoming lectures.

General Psychology (with Ms. Meraj) – In groups, students presented their original research projects to the class.

Computer Science (with Mr. Tobias) – Students practiced their programming skills in the computer lab, by creating program that draw shapes (squares, triangles, pentagons, and hexagons). They used the program “Snap!”, which is a perfect tool for beginners in coding. The straightforward drag-and-drop interface “Snap!” provides encourages experimentation, discovery, and learning from errors.

Coding Design (with Ms. Lee) – Students learned some of the basics of coding in the computer lab. These basics will allow the students to create their own programs as they continue to expand their skills!
